I wish to publicly applaud Parma Councilman Mark Drabik’s ongoing efforts to inform Parma residents about what has actually been transpiring within the Parma Police Department in recent months. Councilman Drabik has worked strenuously on behalf of the Parma Police Department and Parma residents to ensure that the truth about our city’s safety forces is disseminated throughout our community. Councilman Drabik has unselfishly shared his thoughts and knowledge about various police related issues on the parma-oh.com guest-book, in his detailed and fascinating newsletter bulletins that he distributes to citizens residing within the boundaries of his ward, in personal correspondences with Parma residents, and in special joint police and council meetings to further inform the public about the facts regarding the Parma Police Department. Furthermore, Councilman Drabik demonstrated effective leadership and organizational skills by inviting my father, who is a Parma police captain, a truck club, and myself to assist in the volunteer clean-up of Center Park in Councilman Drabik’s ward. Not only did we help to beautify a portion of our community, we also saved the city hundreds of dollars by mostly using our own equipment and working without being paid by the city. That a police captain would work without being paid to help out his community proves the dedication and selflessness of our police officers. That a councilman would provide an opportunity for the police and city officials to work together demonstrates that some politicians are respectable individuals more concerned about what is right rather than what is necessarily the popular political move of the day. Councilman Drabik has clearly gone above and beyond what other council members have thus far done to present us with a fair and accurate representation of the Parma Police Department and has done so despite potential attacks from the Parma Police Department’s misguided opponents. Not only do I personally support Councilman Drabik’s courage concerning his interest in fact-based reporting about the Parma Police, my entire family feels satisfaction knowing that we have at least one member of council who is not part of any biased political machine.
I am honored to say that my family has recently become a part of a proud tradition in our community. My father, Daniel Zarzeczny, a graduate of Cleveland State University and a former major in the United States Marine Corps, rose through the ranks in the Parma Police Department to become, in the recent past, a captain of the Parma Police Department. Following in those footsteps, my brother, David Zarzeczny, who graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College, went from being a corrections officer at the Parma jail to being a police officer for South Euclid, before using his experience from these jobs and his correspondingly high qualifications to become a Parma police officer. There is much more to becoming a police officer than simply passing or scoring well on a civil service exam and I am pleased to have two family members, who not only were, like myself, students at Padua Franciscan High School in Parma, but who had all the additional experience and qualifications necessary to fulfill all the requirements expected of a police officer. In addition, their experience in athletic activities throughout their lives, which included everything from football to baseball, wrestling to throwing the shot put, gave them the physical conditioning needed to effectively enforce the law.
Acknowledging Parma police officers’ attributes such as those mentioned in the preceding paragraph, Councilman Drabik continues to promote the positive and reputable side of our police officers, which unfortunately tends to be underreported. Therefore, I strongly feel that Councilman Drabik should be commended for his praiseworthy actions.
